But do you know its history? Label Naturel invites you to travel through the ages to discover how this fabric has evolved, until it became a essential in our bedrooms.

The origins of cotton gauze

The term “cotton gauze” comes from the Arab world. It is thanks to the weavers of Gaza, réputés pour leur expertise dans la fabrication de tissus légers et fins que ce tissu a trouvé son nom. Le terme "gaze" provenant de la ville de Gaza, un ancien centre de textile production located on the coast of Palestine.

A travers les époques et les routes commerciales, la cotton gauze little by little widespread in Europe.

First used for the manufacture of veils and bandages, it was then put forward as luxury fabric. Used in the making of clothing and accessories for the nobility, during the 18th century.

Then, its production became more democratic. C’est ainsi qu’elle devint accessible à un plus large public, lors des 19 et 20ème siècles. We then appreciate its benefits, its softness and breathability. Celles-ci sont mises au profit des enfants et des bébés, avec la making bed linen adapted to the latter.

The arrival of the fashion bohème dans les années 1960-70 rendra ce tissu très prisé pour la création de dresses and shirts at natural and elegant style.

FAQs

What is cotton gauze?
Cotton gauze is a light fabric with an airy weave, composed of thin layers of cotton connected together. This construction creates a soft feel, a slightly embossed appearance and excellent breathability, very popular for bed linen.
What are the advantages of cotton gauze for bed linen?
It regulates the temperature well thanks to an open weave which lets air circulate. Its soft drape provides a lot of softness and, good news, the naturally wrinkled appearance does not require ironing. Comfort increases wash after wash.
How to maintain cotton gauze on a daily basis?
Prefer a gentle wash at 30–40°C, with a Detergent suitable and moderate spinning. Avoid ironing to maintain the natural embossed look. Drying in the open air or on a gentle cycle helps preserve volume and suppleness.
What is the difference between single, double and triple cotton gauze?
Simple gauze is very light and more airy. Double gauze superimposes two layers, offering greater hold and opacity. The triple gauze adds an extra layer for an even more cozy and warm look.
Is cotton gauze suitable for sensitive skin and babies?
Yes, its softness and breathable weave make it an ally for delicate skin. By choosing certified gauze that is not unnecessarily treated, we limit the risk of irritation while providing enveloping comfort.
Does cotton gauze keep you warm in winter?
Simple gauze is ideal for mid-season and summer. For the cold period, we favor double or triple gauze, more enveloping, or we layer it with a duvet and a bed throw to gain warmth.
Cotton gauze, percale or linen: what to choose for your bedroom?
Gauze favors airy softness and crinkled relief. Percale offers a cool, smooth hand, ideal if you like crisp fabrics. Linen, more textured, excels in thermoregulation. The best choice depends on the desired result and your sensitivity.
