Comment choisir sa couverture en 5 étapes ? - Label Naturel

For peaceful nights, always at the right temperature, the choice of Blanket is essential.

Thermal comfort, physiological comfort, materials and dimensions, no detail should be overlooked.

The objective of this guide is to help you choose your Blanket in 5 quick and easy steps. A Cover Guide in wool will help you make your choice if necessary.

1 - CHOOSE THE SIZE

Don't hesitate to think big to be comfortably tucked in and make your bed easily: always allow 80 cm more than the width of your mattress and 40 cm more in length to tuck in well at the foot of the bed.

Bed dimensions Dimensions of the Blanket
Single bed 90 x 190 cm 180 x 240 cm
Double bed 120 x 190 cm 180 x 240 cm
Standard double bed 140 x 190 cm 220 x 240 cm
Queen bed 160 x 200 cm 240 x 260 cm
King bed 180 X 200 cm and beyond 240 x 300 cm

2 - CHOOSE THE COMPOSITION

There are two large families of Blanket : the synthetic covers and the natural covers.

Today, the synthetic covers and in particular polar are very widespread because they are generally inexpensive. However, they have several disadvantages:

  • synthetic fibers come from petroleum derivatives or polymerized natural materials: they are therefore chemical,
  • they often undergo additional antibacterial chemical treatment,
  • they absorb little moisture and regulate temperature poorly, which makes you sweat,
  • they can cause allergies.

True to our philosophy, we only offer natural covers on our site:

  • more respectful of nature,
  • softer,
  • more comfortable,
  • healthier,
  • less allergenic.

There are many types of natural covers whose prices have become completely affordable, at the forefront of which we find the wool blankets, those in cotton or even in silk.

Each of these different natural fibers has its virtues and therefore its unconditional fans: silk and cotton provide warmth and comfort without excess and are often intended for mid-season, the hot season or temperate rooms, when wool blankets, especially the thicker ones, are particularly cozy and suitable for the cold season.

3 - CHOOSE THE RIGHT COVERING POWER

Choosing a good Blanket is essential for nights at a good temperature.

Several criteria combine and must be taken into account:

  • The sleeper's reluctance: Each individual is unique and reacts differently to ambient temperature.

In the event that the Blanket is intended for two people, we advise you to choose one Blanket in wool which is suitable for the less chilly of the two sleepers then add a blanket or quilt at the end of the bed which can be used by the more chilly sleeper.

Also keep in mind that two bodies in a bed release more heat inside it. Avoid choosing a Blanket very hot when you sleep together, you risk being too hot and this will affect the quality of your sleep.
  • Thermal comfort: it is determined by the importance of the weight, in other words by the weight per cm2 ratio of your Blanket. This should allow your body's natural heat to be maintained at the same level throughout the night, without sweating or even feeling clammy.

Optimal comfort takes into account both weight and of course the temperature maintained in the room.

Some people prefer to sleep in a cool room maintained at 15 or 16° C, others in a room heated to 21° C, still others in a temperate room maintained at 19° C (recommended temperature in a room).

Today apartments and houses are adequately heated and properly insulated; it is therefore not necessary in this case to choose a Blanket very hot. On the other hand, for rooms with little or no heating at all, we advise you to choose a Blanket hot or even very hot.

  • Physiological comfort: This is the capacity of your Blanket to evacuate the humidity produced during the night by your body. In fact, to avoid excess perspiration your skin needs to breathe. All the 100% natural fiber blankets that we offer on the site offer very good physiological comfort, allowing the evacuation of humidity simply because of the absence of any synthetic material in their composition.

  • The composition: the touch, the softness and the swelling of the Blanket also have a great importance in the choice you make, just like anti-mite or antibacterial treatments which preventively respond to allergy problems.

4 - CHOOSE THE HEAT INDEX

On our site, blankets are classified using 4 warmth indices: light, temperate, warm, very warm.

Each index corresponds to a season of the year or to the temperature maintained in the room at which the Blanket is destined.

Finally, most Anglo-Saxon commercial sites formulate the heat index of their blankets in TOG, a measurement scale graduated from 1 to 15 depending on the capacity of the blanket. Blanket to store heat and release it evenly throughout the sleeper's body. You will therefore also find in the table below a correspondence between our heat indices and the TOG reference.

Index Season TOG Pictogram Usage
Light Summer 1 to 4.5 TOG Ideal for people sensitive to heat, for mild seasons (spring/summer) and for heated rooms > 20°
Temperate Mid-season 10.5 TOG Ideal for temperate rooms from 17° to 20°
Hot Winter 12.5 TOG Ideal for people sensitive to cold or for poorly heated rooms from 14° to 17°
Very hot Winter 13.5 to 15 TOG Ideal for people very sensitive to cold or for unheated rooms < 14°

5 - CHECK THE LABELS

The labels will also help you make your choice. Issued by independent organizations, they guarantee the absence of toxic substances, the natural composition, the origin and of course the quality of the products.

So, when one of our covers is labeled (Oeko-Tex®, Woolmark, etc.), we clearly mention the label it benefits from, specify the certification body which issues it and explain to you the meaning and purpose of this label on the product you are about to purchase.

Here you will find all our quality labels.

FAQs

What is fill power (CUIN)?
Fill power, expressed in CUIN, measures the capacity of down to retain air and therefore to insulate. The higher this number, the better the thermal performance.
How to choose the weight of a down duvet?
The weight should be proportional to the conditions of the room and your needs. But even with a moderate weight, good swelling power allows excellent insulation, because it is the trapped air that heats, not just the density of the filling.
Goose down or duck down: what’s the difference?
Goose down generally has a higher fill power than duck down, which makes it warmer at the same weight.
How to recognize the quality of a duvet on a label?
To recognize the quality of a down, you must observe: the CUIN number (filling power), the origin (goose or duck), the animal welfare and environmental labels (RDS, Oeko-Tex), as well as the envelope (often in organic cotton).
Is a natural duvet suitable for all seasons?
Yes, with the right selection of warmth ratings (light, temperate, warm, extra warm), a natural duvet can be suitable all year round depending on the temperature of the room and your sensitivity.
