What is cotton flannel and how does it differ from wool flannel?
Flannel is a fabric obtained by a tight then brushed weave, which gives it this fluffy and warm appearance. Traditionally made of wool, it also exists in cotton. Cotton flannel maintains the softness and breathability of this fiber while providing a plush texture, while wool flannel remains thicker and warmer.
Does flannel keep you warm?
Yes, flannel naturally retains heat thanks to its brushed fibers which trap a thin layer of insulating air. It provides gentle warmth, ideal in winter, while remaining breathable to avoid feelings of suffocation.
How to care for and wash cotton flannel sheets?
To preserve the softness of the flannel, wash at 40°C maximum with a Detergent soft. Avoid overly aggressive softeners that weigh down the fibers. Air drying is recommended, but tumble drying at low temperature is possible. Ironing is not necessary. Note that small pills may appear after the first washes, a normal phenomenon linked to the structure of the fabric.
How to recognize a quality flannel?
A good flannel is distinguished by its weight (the denser the fabric, the warmer and more durable it will be) and by the quality of the cotton used, often combed for greater softness and resistance. The weaving and scraping finishes also influence comfort. A lightweight flannel is best suited for shoulder seasons, while a heavy flannel is ideal for winter.
When to use flannel?
Flannel is particularly recommended for cold seasons like fall and winter. Its insulating power maintains a pleasant temperature throughout the night. On the other hand, it can be too hot in summer, where lighter fabrics like percale or satin are preferable.
